For most contract fields in the Contract Detail page for any contract, ContractsAI provides two helpful aids:

• Source — where the value came from in the contract text
• Explanation — why that value was selected/interpreted

These features improve trust, speed up validation, and make reviews easier for legal and business users.

What “Source” means

Source points to the exact contract language used to extract or derive a field value.

For example, if a field shows Payment terms: Net 30, the Source link points to the sentence/section in the contract that contains that term.

What “Explanation” means

Explanation provides additional context about how the system interpreted the source text for that field.

Typical explanation content may include:

• a plain-language rationale for the extracted value
• confidence/context cues
• handling of nearby wording or qualifiers
• why a specific date/value/entity was chosen when multiple candidates exist

Use Explanation when the field value is ambiguous, business-critical, or needs audit-ready justification.

Source + Explanation workflow

1. Review the field value in Contract Detail.
2. Click Source to confirm the exact clause/snippet in the PDF.
3. Read Explanation to understand interpretation logic.
4. If needed, update the field (where editable) or escalate for legal review.
