Contract Effective terms
Understand effective dates and use the timeline slider to review term phases, renewals, and key contract milestones over time.
The Effective terms tab in Contract Detail page of a specific Contract helps you understand when a contract starts, what term phase it is currently in, and how renewal/termination windows shift over time.
It combines contract term metadata with a visual timeline so you can review obligations and dates in context.
What are effective terms?
Effective terms are the date-based terms that determine the contract lifecycle, such as:
- effective/start date
- initial term end date
- renewal cycles
- notice windows
- termination timing
- expiration/end date
These terms define the “active timeline” of the agreement and drive renewal planning, reminders, and compliance checks.
Timeline view
The timeline provides a visual representation of contract lifecycle periods, for example:
- Initial term
- Renewal period(s)
- Notice window(s)
- Termination or expiry point
- Other date-based milestones configured for your org
This makes it easier to spot upcoming events than reading individual date fields one by one.
Using the timeline slider
Use the slider to move across time and inspect different points in the contract lifecycle.
How to use it
- Open the contract detail page and go to the effective terms/timeline area.
- Drag the slider handle left or right to move backward/forward in time.
- Watch the timeline update as the selected date changes.
- Review which phase the contract is in at that point (e.g., initial term vs renewal).
- Check nearby milestones (notice deadlines, renewal transitions, end date).
Why the slider is useful
- Scenario planning: See what changes if you review dates earlier/later.
- Renewal prep: Quickly identify if you are inside or approaching a notice window.
- Operational coordination: Align legal, procurement, and business actions with time-sensitive events.
- Audit clarity: Explain lifecycle state at a specific date without manual date math.
Data quality note
Timeline accuracy depends on extracted and configured date fields.
If dates are missing or incorrect, effective term visualization may be incomplete until fields are updated or the contract is re-analyzed.
